terrasonica

A library of disappearing sounds
A repository of auditory heritage

Terrasonica is the sound project of Vera Cavallin, musician and curator. Launched in 2024 with the support of Culture Moves Europe (Goethe-Institut and the European Commission), Terrasonica began as a personal exploration: a sound map of the island of Favignana, Sicily. The goal was to capture and share the island’s acoustic landscape with curious listeners, travelers, and passersby. That first map marked the beginning of a wider journey—one that now extends far beyond Favignana. As time passed, and through various professional residencies and long-term stays abroad, a deeper awareness began to take shape. The original intention to document a local soundscape gradually evolved into a broader reflection on sonic heritage. Many natural and cultural sounds are at risk of disappearing, silenced by environmental change and human activity. Today, Terrasonica is a growing, open-ended archive of vanishing or transforming soundscapes. It offers not only a listening experience but also a space for reflection and discovery—an invitation to travel, listen, and act. Each map includes a yellow “I” icon, providing detailed information about the recordings made in that specific location.
